Become a Contract Doula
DAI is a growing organization and is looking for Contract Doulas who support our vision and mission. We believe that everyone who wants a doula should have access to one. We also believe that doula care should be representative and inclusive.We believe that doula care can and does improve health outcomes for individuals, families and communities.
Here are some important things to know about joining our team of doulas:
While many of our Doulas are connected to the Ithaca Doula Collective, you do not need to be a IDC doula in order to participate in our program.
You can be hired as a doula through DAI. This is where a client reaches out for a doula, you would say you are available, the client would interview you and then make the decision to hire you.
You can also be hired directly from the client, and then apply to DAI for funds to pay for your services (as long as your client qualifies for the program, and you are a participating doula).
For birth work, we pay doulas $600 for the birth. For postpartum and full spectrum care we pay $20 per hour.
There is paperwork. (We are a non-profit, of course there is!) We will have you fill out the Agreement of Participation:contract. Once you are a participating doula, you will have access to the contract doula login page where you will find our Orientation packet, doula forms and other helpful information.

These are core values we uphold and seek to work with doulas who are interested in learning more, and have a commitment to upholding those values.
Inclusivity- We believe inclusion means recognition, acceptance, and proactive awareness of needs for people of all backgrounds. We promote inclusivity in all areas, including with regards to sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, ability, family composition and financial means.
Accessibility- We believe that everyone deserves doula care who desires it and that people from all backgrounds can become doulas. We promote financial and practical access to doula care.
Support for birthing people and their families- We aim to connect birthing people and their families to doulas who provide doula care through a wide range of support services, including education, emotional support, physical support, and referrals.
Reproductive justice- We believe everyone has the right to not only make their own decisions about their body, health, and sexuality, but also to access the quality care needed to do so.
Racial justice- We recognize that racial injustice negatively impacts all families and works to dismantle systemic racism and white supremacy.
Autonomy- We believe in the individual rights and autonomy of birthing persons and families, including the right to make choices about their body.
Informed Care- We are passionate about supporting birth and families through informed care and practices. We are proud that evidence shows doulas are important for many things in the birth and postpartum environment. We also recognize there are aspects of our work that are not strictly “evidence-based” but still have great value to our clients and the strengths and limitations of such studies. We acknowledge that the term “evidence-based” can be diminutive and perpetuates the erasure of many different cultures and wisdoms.
Deep community relationships-We create strong collaborative relationships based in trust and mutual respect to better serve the community.
We aren’t able to advertise your doula business through our website, but will feature participating doulas from time to time on our website. Participating families may learn about you through our website, or they may learn about DAI through your communication with them about accessing doula care.
